Amsterdam
I really enjoyed Amsterdam. We walked around a bunch of streets and ate a bunch of different street food, including those cones with fries and a secret sauce called mayo. I had coffee, a lot of coffee. Those space cakes, which they serve at coffee shops. Bitterballen, which is hard to explain, but there pretty much like meatballs and mash potatoes in one. We went to this coffee shop that Gabby wanted to go to with bean bags on the floor and I had water and green leaves which actually is a lot yummier than it sounds. We were let on a canal ride for free and it took us straight to our hostel. The canal is a really interesting concept. Krista even mentioned how crazy the idea of instead of driving around people are taking their boats across town. Also there were many houses on the canal right in the water. I think theres over 200 I heard or read somewhere.
The buildings are interesting too. Our hostel was something before what it is now. To think they had big rooms used like that for other things is crazy to me. All the buildings were fascinating. The red light district was cool to walk down too. Basically, in Amsterdam, weed and prostitution is very..very... VERY legal. More than in San Francisco (Weed wise). You are able to walk into a coffee shop (thats what they call there dispensaries, they call places where you get coffee "cafès") and order what ever strain you want, with or without tobacco, and if you want it pre rolled or not. At the red light district, Krista and I went to the prostitution museum. It was educational and we learned a lot about what the red district is. Pretty much, prostitutes pay taxes, rent out a room, work on a schedule, and can choice who they want to do stuff with. They stand in front of windows with red lights on them and dance to get peoples attraction. People pass by them, judge them, stare at them, and harass the women.
We stopped at the Anne Frank house. They had all her original diary entries and we were able to see all the rooms of the attic thing they stayed in. Also, the cafe in the building had the best coffee I have ever had ever. Another thing about Amsterdam is everyone rides bikes everywhere. Theres so many bikes just all lined up or stacked on top of each other. If it was warmer, I would have loved to ride a bike all over. David Byrne wrote a entire chapter about him biking in Amsterdam in his book bicycle diaries. We went to this pizza place that one of Gabbys clients recommended to her that was so good. They had this olive oil on the table made out of actual real olives with some hot peppers inside.
Overall I recommend a trip to Amsterdam. Its another world for sure, where everything people do secretly is legal. And where people love coffee, and where buildings are as very very old. I need to learn some new adjectives.
