Edie

To all who know Edie or know of Edie, this is her back story.

Early Life:

Edie is a Chihuahua mix (not sure of the other breed that she could be but I do plan on getting her a DNA test to see one day). She was born and raised in Downtown ,San Francisco, California (from what I believe). I am not really sure of her early life, or what her name was before, or what troubles she went through but this is what I know: Edie grew up in the Tenderloin with a not so good family. Edie is extremely scared of men, so whenever a guy approaches her, her instinct is to attack, sometimes women too. We believe that it could be due to the guy she was living before who would probably hurt her, thinking thats how you discipline a dog. Edie doesn't like other dogs either. I have never seen her nice to any dog. Except one street dog whose name is Little Man and he looked a lot like Edie. We were going back into my apartment and Edie refused to go through the gate as it buzzed cause she saw a dog running toward her off lease. I thought she was going to attack him but she was so happy that she began to cry and I am not kidding. I have heard Edie cry of happiness three times ever and it was not toward a dog. Edie apparently has a few other dogs that she adores. They are all street dogs living with homeless people on the streets and all the dogs have street names too. (Money, Cash, Littleman, and Nae Nae were all her friends) One of the dogs name is Cash. Edie fell in love with Cash, or maybe she just loved him as a friend (idk how dogs work in that sense) but she would look out the window in hopes of spotting him.

Meeting Beth, Emma and Bean:

My family in San francisco live on a street called Eddy street, it's about a block from my street, Ellis. (BTW, Eddy street is named after: William M. Eddy who was elected City Surveyor in 1850. And Ellis street is named after After A.J. Ellis, a prominent business man for many years. He was a member of the Ayuntamiento, or Town Council, of 1849.) One day they saw the family of Edie's fighting right in front of their building. From what I know, the guy was fighting with the lady he was with and poor Edie was hiding under the stroller behind the lady. Emma and Beth are amazing people and of course when they see a dog being abused or in danger they help no matter what. (Beth's mom also rescues dogs and even writes story books about the dogs she rescues!) Beth has also rescued another small dog named Rolly from a homeless guy for under $9. I used to dog sit Rolly after his rescue and we both love each other very much. When we first met tho he did try to bit me but thats just an instinct of a dog who grows up in bad environments. Its to protect themselves or their owner because everything is a threat to them. Rolly lives with his wonderful mom, Rae, and honestly receives more love than you can ever imagine. He loves people now too.

Anyway, Beth went outside and offered to take the dog. She told the couple that she had a good home with another sweet dog (Bean) and that she will take care of this dog no matter what. The lady was refusing a lot, but when you love something so much, you will do anything to make sure it is happy and if that meant giving up her dog that she adores to a good home, then I praise that women and I wish I could tell her she made the right choice. Edie was pretty much hairless when they brought her in. She was so scared of everything and everyone. Noise would scare her, brooms would scare her, men would scare her. Walking Edie in certain areas in the tenderloin would scare her. Fernando believes that she could have seen something really scary or has bad trauma from a memory on certain streets in the Tenderloin. I believe it too. Sometimes I would have to drag her or carry her down some streets because she would not allow us to walk down it.

After a few months of Edie being rescued by two angels, Edie and I met After 2 weeks of moving to San Francisco I got a job at Peoples Barber where I met Beth. From what I remember, I heard Beth in the break room leaving her mom a voicemail just checking in on her. I knew then I would really like Beth because she is a good person! Beth offered me a awesome gig of watching Edie while they went out on vacation and I said yes of course. The day I met Edie, I think we were both scared.  I was scared because I have always been scared of dogs. Edie did not bite me when we first met. She allowed me to pet her and after Beth and Emma left, we hung out for a while together until we became very best friends. After dog sitting Edie, I found so much happiness in being around her. I would always complain and say how I miss her so much. I would ask Beth if I could just take her out for a little bit and hang out with her. Or if she could come sleep over. After that, whenever they could go on vacation, I would watch Edie, this lasted almost three years.

How Edie Became my puppy:

Edie can get jealous. Bean is a sweet dog who is a lot older and is ill and broken in a lot of ways. When she saw her moms taking care of Bean she would get so jealous and try to attack her sister. Knowing whats best for Edie and Bean for both of them to be happy, I was offered Edie. Without hesitation, except doggie proofing the apartment, Edie was welcomed to her new home. Idk if I could ever be her mom because I can never take place of what Beth and Emma did for her, but she is now my puppy and my best friend.

Beth and Emma changed her name to Edie, named after Eddy st. (Girl version is Edie). Just like the other dogs, Edie has a street name too, but Edie's name is LITERALLY a street name. They told me I could change her name but I would absolutely never change her name because her name is pretty much her story.

This is the story of my little puppy, Edie.

I have read so many articles of dogs that live with homeless people in the streets of San Francisco. It honeslty takes a second to look something up like this and to be able to change the way you think about abused animals.

Lastly, not saying that you should rescue a dog from a homeless person whenever you see it and take care of it like amazing Beth, but if you see something, do something. You can easily do what she does and find it a home through the community of your people you are connected with. Or, you can take care of it for a little, and take it to a place where they rescue dogs and DO NOT put them down no matter what. For instance the SPCA does not put down any animals unless they are in pain from an illness or old age. And I am not apposed to some homeless people having pets because in a sense, they take care of their dog more than they take care of themselves. "Pets provide a deep comfort. Pets are non-judgmental. They are loyal. They provide warmth and security. The homeless get a type of normalcy by providing food and water for their pets. In some cases, they provide them with reality".

One more thing: If you are looking for a dog, go to your local dog rescue or your local SPCA. I have worked for both Rocket Dog and SPCA and I know there are always dogs (and puppies!) that need a home rather than going to a breeder. And if you can't rescue, you can honestly just donate a little bit of your time volenteering. And if you can't do that either then idk just give them a small donation to help keep non profits like that alive. And if you can't even do that then why did you even read this lol?
